A Rebrand for the Ages

Established in 1789, Hedges is an Oxfordshire law firm that generations of people have depended on for more than two centuries. With its solid reputation built on deep client and community relationships, it’s been a lifelong partner within many a household. 

So when this 200-year-old-plus organisation entered a new era by becoming employee-owned in 2022, it was the perfect rebranding opportunity to combine its timeless heritage with the next chapter in its history. 

Our brief was to refresh and modernise both the brand and the website. In terms of branding, it was to ensure that the new brand attracted and appealed to new clients, yet still retained Hedges’ core identity and the approval and loyalty of its many long-standing clients. For the website, as well as the new branding being interwoven throughout, the aim was to improve the quality and types of enquiries that it generated so that it would bring in larger projects and work more aligned with Hedges’ specialisms.

 

Part of the fabric

We wanted the brand to exude a sense of warmth, belonging and security. Firstly, to reflect the nature of Hedges’ steadfast approach to its relationships with clients and, secondly, to emphasise the empathetic way it helps clients through what are often highly sensitive and emotive legal dilemmas. 

And as Hedges has been such an established and comforting constant for the Oxfordshire community, we identified the idea of ‘fabric’ as an apt metaphor to represent their place within peoples’ lives, and then visually, subtly interweaved it into the new brand identity.

We chose a unique typeface that has been specifically designed to combine the old and the new in one font set. A sharp, modern serif represents the classic, while a sophisticated sans-serif embodies a more contemporary feel. Each can be used in different situations as appropriate.
